How to Light your oil lamp

How to Light an Oil Lamp

Follow our simple step-by-step guide to safely fill, light and maintain a traditional oil lamp for the best performance and longest chimney life.

Traditional oil lamps are simple to use and can provide many hours of reliable light when used correctly. Following the correct procedure will help ensure a clean flame, reduce soot and prolong the life of both the wick and chimney.

Before You Start

Always use clean colourless lamp oil or paraffin designed for traditional oil lamps. Never overfill the oil reservoir.

Step 1 – Remove the Oil Reservoir

Remove the oil holder or font from the lamp before filling. This helps prevent spills and keeps the lamp clean.

Step 2 – Remove the Chimney and Burner

Lift off the glass chimney and carefully unscrew the burner from the oil holder.

Do not use the burner stem as a lever when unscrewing the burner, as this may cause damage.

Step 3 – Fill with Lamp Oil

Fill the oil holder to approximately three-quarters full using colourless lamp oil or paraffin.

Avoid overfilling, as this may cause spills when replacing the burner.

Step 4 – Replace the Burner

Carefully screw the burner back onto the oil holder until it is secure.

Step 5 – Allow the Wick to Soak

Leave the wick for approximately 30 minutes so it becomes completely saturated with oil before lighting.

Lighting a dry wick can cause poor burning and shorten the life of the wick.

Step 6 – Adjust the Wick

Turn the wick adjustment wheel until the wick sits just above the burner.

If necessary, trim the wick level using sharp scissors or a knife.

Step 7 – Light the Lamp

Light the wick and immediately replace the glass chimney.

Keep the flame low while the chimney warms up gradually. This helps reduce the risk of thermal shock and cracking.

Step 8 – Adjust the Flame

Increase the flame slowly until it burns cleanly with no smoke.

When using a new wick, you may need to readjust the flame several times as the wick settles and expands.

Step 9 – Extinguishing the Lamp

Turn the wick adjustment wheel down until the flame goes out naturally.

Allow the chimney to cool completely before relighting or cleaning the lamp.
