Project Overview

John Moncrieff supplied a range of oil lamps for The Paradise, a British television drama that premiered in 2012 on BBC One. The series is an adaptation of Émile Zola’s 1883 novel Au Bonheur des Dames.

This was not a standard lighting supply project. The production needed period-appropriate lighting that helped build the visual tone of the series while sitting naturally within the set design.

This project demonstrates where specialist supply creates real value: traditional lighting products that support historical atmosphere and believable period environments on screen.

Scope of Supply

  • A range of oil lamps for set use
  • Period-appropriate lighting for television production
  • Lighting selected to support historical atmosphere
  • Supply for period interior set environments

Why This Project Matters

In period television, lighting plays a major role in how authentic the environment feels. The right lamp or fitting can help create a believable visual world, while the wrong one can weaken the whole effect.

Productions like The Paradise rely on details that support the setting without distracting from it. Oil lamps helped reinforce the historical tone of the series and contributed to the warm, atmospheric quality associated with period drama.

The right lighting solution supported both — delivering historically appropriate detail while helping shape the overall atmosphere on screen.
