Project Overview

John Moncrieff was proud to manufacture bespoke frosted cylinder light shades for Crosby Library, Liverpool. Opened in 1968, the library retained its original chandelier fittings, but missing and damaged shades meant replacement components were needed to restore the scheme properly.

This was not a generic replacement job. The brief demanded shades that matched the original fittings as closely as possible while also working within the physical constraints of the existing chandeliers.

This project demonstrates where bespoke manufacturing creates real value: replacement glass components made with the right size, finish and visual accuracy for installations where the originals cannot simply be swapped for standard off-the-shelf alternatives.

Scope of Supply

  • Bespoke frosted cylinder glass shades
  • Replacement shades manufactured from sample and drawing
  • Components produced to work within the original chandelier layout
  • Glass tailored to a live public building restoration setting

Why This Project Matters

The chandelier fittings at Crosby Library hang in clusters, so accuracy was about more than appearance. Weight and balance also mattered. A replacement shade that looked close but performed differently could have affected how the fittings sat within the installation.

Bespoke frosted glass shades made the restoration feel credible. They allowed the missing and damaged components to be replaced without visually disrupting the original lighting scheme, helping deliver an end result that blended properly with the existing fittings rather than standing out for the wrong reasons.

Quote from the Client

“Light shades all received and now installed. As you can see, your team has done a fantastic job — you genuinely can’t tell the difference from the originals. For reference, your five shades are on the bottom rung of the chandelier.

We’re really pleased with the results — they’ve made a significant improvement to the lighting in the library. A big thank you from all of us in Crosby.” Andrew Farthing, Sefton Council
