Grade II Listed Hotel

Project Overview

John Moncrieff Ltd supplied custom lighting for The George in Rye following its restoration after a major fire. The hotel is a Grade II listed property in East Sussex, and the project required fittings that respected the building’s historic character while meeting modern hospitality requirements.

This was not a standard hotel lighting scheme. The fittings needed to sit naturally within a heritage interior, support the restored spaces and deliver the level of durability expected in a busy commercial environment.

This project demonstrates where specialist supply creates real value: custom lighting solutions that combine traditional character, practical performance and a finish that works properly in listed hospitality settings.

Scope of Supply

  • Triplex opal globe lights
  • Gallery pendant fixtures with antique-finish galleries
  • Hospitality-grade fittings for long-term commercial use
  • Lighting selected to work with period architectural features

Why This Project Matters

In a listed hotel, lighting has to do more than illuminate the room. It needs to support the original character of the building and sit comfortably alongside features such as fireplaces, timber beams and period mouldings.

At the same time, hospitality lighting must perform reliably in a high-traffic setting. The George in Rye required fittings that balanced authenticity, durability and a consistent visual standard across rooms, corridors and lounges.

The right lighting solution supported both — preserving the atmosphere of the hotel while meeting the practical expectations of modern commercial use.
